Personal Development Curriculum (PDC)
At Up Holland High School, Personal Development is a central pillar of our curriculum, designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, values and experiences they need to thrive both in school and beyond. Our comprehensive Personal Development programme promotes the development of confident, resilient and responsible young people who are prepared to make informed decisions, contribute positively to society and succeed in an ever-changing world.
The curriculum is delivered through a carefully sequenced programme of morning Personal Development lessons, which focus on four key strands: Character Education, Understanding the Wider World – News and ERIC (Everyone Reads In Class), Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG), and a rolling programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education. Together, these strands provide students with regular opportunities to develop their personal attributes, broaden their horizons, understand their place within local and global communities, and prepare for future education, employment and training pathways.
In addition to weekly provision, students participate in two annual whole-school Character and Culture Days. These dedicated drop-down days provide immersive, project-based learning experiences that allow students to explore complex and contemporary issues in greater depth. Delivered through a combination of external specialist providers and school staff, these days enhance and extend the core curriculum, addressing themes such as diversity, equality, relationships, wellbeing, citizenship, employability, cultural awareness and personal responsibility.
A substantial and cohesive enrichment programme further strengthens our Personal Development offer. Enrichment opportunities span all areas of school life, including sport, the arts, leadership, community engagement, academic extension, careers and personal interests, ensuring that every student can develop their talents, interests and aspirations beyond the classroom. Our provision is responsive and evolving, shaped by student voice, emerging needs and wider societal developments. Through regular consultation and feedback, students play an active role in influencing the opportunities available, enabling us to provide an inclusive programme that is relevant, engaging and meaningful for all learners. This commitment to enrichment enhances students' cultural capital, promotes personal growth and supports the development of confident, well-rounded individuals.
Our Personal Development curriculum reflects the school's commitment to developing the whole-child, resulting in well-rounded young people who embody our values, demonstrate positive character traits and are equipped with the confidence, knowledge and cultural capital required to flourish in modern Britain and the wider world.
